If you are not a member of the ICMA, you need to become a member of ICMA first before applying for the MBA or DBA programs. You will need to go to the ICMA website to apply for membership. You cannot apply for membership via this Calwest University website.
Minimum Educational Requirements for MBA and DBA
The minimum educational requirement to do the MBA is a recognized undergraduate degree or equivalent professional qualification in any discipline; and for enrolling in the DBA program, the minimum educational requirements are both an undergraduate degree and masters degree (or equivalent). Those who already have an MBA can go directly to the DBA – for MBAs program offering once they become members of ICMA.
IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR MEMBERS OF THE INSTITUTE OF CERTIFIED MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTANTS
Calwest University currently offers the MBA and DBA educational programs, solely for ICMA’s membership.
Please have your Membership Number [CID or MID] prior to commencing the Calwest Application process.
The following are the four pathways available within the two programs (click on icons to get to preferred course):
This is the course most attractive MBA pathway for CMA certification holders. Due to Calwest University’s knowledge of the course content of the CMA Program; the CMA certification holders will automatically get Recognized Prior Learning (RPL) credit for 8 out of 12 courses. They will need to do only 4 further courses, (1) Business Ethics and (2) Global Issues, (3) Critical Thinking and (4) Philosophy, to obtain their MBA. Once you register for the MBA for CMA program, these four courses are done online at your own pace from anywhere in the world. The full cost of the MBA program for CMAs only is US$5,350 (normally US$10,150), and additionally CMA holders get Recognized Prior Learning Credit (RPL) credit for 8 (out of 12) courses for their previous CMA professional studies.
This is the MBA pathway most attractive for AMA members of ICMA who have an undergraduate degree (or equivalent professional qualification). [Note that AMA level membership certificate holders of ICMA are considered to be equivalent to having an undergraduate degree in business]. No Recognized Prior Learning (RPL) credit is given initially, but members may apply for RPL credit for any courses they have done in previous studies in the subject area. Members who do not have examination transcripts for their prior studies may also apply for challenge exams. This also is also good for CMA Certification holders who wish to revise their knowledge in some of the courses. Once you register for the MBA program (US$200), you need to complete 12 courses online at your own pace from anywhere in the world. The minimum cost of this entire program (with maximum RPL credit) is US$5,350. The maximum cost of this entire program (with no RPL credit) is US$10,150.
This is the most attractive DBA pathway for an CMA-certified member of ICMA who has both an Undergraduate and a Master’s degrees (or equivalent). [Note that CMA level membership certificate holders of ICMA are considered to be equivalent to having both an undergraduate and graduate degree in business].No Recognized Prior Learning (RPL) credit is given initially, but members may apply for RPL for any ‘Coursework’ courses they have done in previous studies in the subject area. Members who do not have examination transcripts for their prior studies may also apply for challenge exams. No credit is given for the ‘Research’ courses comprising of: (1) Research Methods; (2) Research Proposal and (3) Research Thesis. From the Research Proposal stage you will be assigned an individual supervisor to guide you through your proposal and thesis. Once you register for the DBA program (US$200), you need to complete 14 courses and your thesis (6 courses equivalent) online at your own pace from anywhere in the world.
If you have a CMA but do not have an MBA we suggest that you first undertake the MBA for CMA pathway and then apply for the DBA for MBA as described below.
The minimum cost of this entire program (with maximum RPL credit) is US$11,750. The maximum cost of this entire program (with no RPL credit) is US$18,350.
This is the course most attractive DBA pathway for an ICMA member who has both an Undergraduate degree (or equivalent) and an MBA. Automatic Recognized Prior Learning (RPL) credit is given for the 11 ‘coursework’ courses for their MBA studies. Students have to complete only the ‘research’ courses comprising of: (1) Research Methods; (2) Research Proposal and (3) Research Thesis. From the Research Proposal stage you will be assigned an individual supervisor to guide you through your proposal and thesis. Once you register for the DBA program (US$200) and get your automatic RPL credit (US$2200) for the 11 ‘Coursework’ courses. You need to complete the 3 ‘research’ courses online at your own pace from anywhere in the world. The cost of this entire program is US$11,750.

Detailed course information will be accessible to students, via Course Syllabuses, PowerPoint presentations and Video instructions (where available) and online Topic Quizzes.

In the case of research courses Doctoral degree program, the maximum time limit for return of research proposals and thesis chapters is one-month.
Qualified Instructors and Assessors: The second major rationale for launching an innovative university such as Calwest, is not only to students a framework have courses delivered by the World’s best and most qualified instructors but also to provide assessment of the learning outcomes obtained. As such Calwest has adjunct faculty, i.e. PhD and Masters Degree qualified professors in traditional universities, to design its courses to be benchmarked and aligned with similar courses from leading universities;; and provide assessments to evaluate student learning (via computer assessments methods) and provide feedback to students in a timely manner.
Library and Other Learning Resources: Calwest has subscribed to the Library and Learning Resources of TopiaU, the online library service. See http://topiau.org/ which includes free Librarian services to students of member universities. More details are provided in this catalog. There may be some minimal charges for complicated searches.
The major rationale of establishing Calwest was to value-add and enable students to take advantage of a world-class program from the USA, available worldwide. Any (traditional or non-traditional) university course has 3 distinct components: (1) Course Content (syllabus; learning outcomes); (2) Course Delivery (face-to-face; distance education; online); and (3) Course Assessment (examination; assignment; credit for prior learning, challenge exams).
The Course Content is solely designed by Calwest faculty, and the syllabus outlines of these courses are listed on the webpage. In designing courses, as benchmarking with other World-class universities is done across most higher education institutions, both traditional and non-traditional; it is very possible that a student’s expected learning outcomes from a course listed and offered in by Calwest can be obtained via a similar online or face-to-face course.
In terms of Course Delivery, all courses will be delivered by Calwest, via its Tubeclasses, which sits on a Moodle platform. The online delivery of courses that impart the ‘Core Values’, ‘Core Building Blocks” and ‘Electives’ will be comprehensive, with Course Syllabuses, PowerPoint presentations and Videos (where relevant). Students are responsible for purchasing (or having access to) the print or electronic text book assigned for the course covering Calwest’s syllabus.
All the Course Assessments will be done by Calwest professors. These assessments include proctored traditional and online exams, assignments, challenge exams and credit for prior learning. The learning of students undertaking all modes of assessment is based on the syllabuses of courses offered at Calwest, and listed in its catalog.
Calwest has furnished in its on-line catalog, a detailed description of how each program will be conducted; and the syllabus of each course conducted internally by the university; including course outlines and compulsory text books. The programs will be asynchronous in that students will take courses at each student's own pace. The access to course materials will be via the internet, using a Moodle Learning Management Platform. The grading scheme for all assessments and the evaluation of student work is presented in each course syllabus of the courses taught by Calwest. The timely response to students’ questions and comments, record keeping and technical support is also managed via Moodle. There is no equipment or supplies that need to be provided to any student, in any of the courses conducted at the university. Note that Calwest does not provide any courses that require the development of a manual or technical skill, such as the use of equipment or tools. Further, no courses are conducted at Calwest that will require a laboratory experience.
Calwest University’s education programs are exclusively for members of the Institute of Certified Management Accountants, a bona fide professional organization. Calwest University’s education programs are sponsored by a bona fide professional organization that offers educational programs solely for that organization's membership, has met the qualifications for exemption from regulation under the Act, pursuant to California Education Code (CEC) section 94874 (b)(1). Please note that this does not imply that Calwest University has approval to operate pursuant to section 94886 or 94890 of the Code. Instead, as an Exempt Institution, it is exempt from regulation under the Act.
